Ridgehill Green

Our application for the land informally known as the 'Picnic Area' was successful at a meeting of the Public Rights of Way and Greens Committee on 15 April 2024. The area is now known as Ridgehill Green and is named on Google maps.

This was the result of much work and support from local residents. The official note of the registration can be seen here

Maintenance

Now we have rights over the green it is important that we maintain it (and document its use) in case of any attempts to overturn the registration in future. Hilary Douglas-Smith runs a WhatsApp group

of volunteers who have set up a rota for grass cutting. It is expected that working parties will be needed from time to time to weed the areas around the trees and trim back the bushes. If any GRNW members would like to contribute to this work, please email Hilary at hcdouglas_23@hotmail.com

Rights of Way

Further applications for rights of way over Ridgehill Green are pending and a decision is expected during August 2025.

  • Nigel Collins' Original Application
  • Bristol City Council Definitive Map & Statement Modification Order No. 7 2025
  • Events

A picnic organised by Carole Wardle and Claire Smart was held on Ridgehill Green on Sunday 22nd June 2025 to mark the successful registration of the Green. Around 40 adults and children attended and children's activities were organised by Hilary Douglas-Smith. We were lucky with the weather as rain had been forecast and the event was very enjoyable.

    Contact People

We rely on our contact people to maintain a link with members in their patch, to keep us informed of changes in occupancy and to take part in the occasional database update and subscription collection.

There are 14 house groups covering GRNW but we currently only have 10 contact people. This includes a recent very welcome addition - Megan Keltie - who has taken over group R4 at the top end of Ridgehill.

Now that most communication with members is done centrally via the Alerts Group a contact person's work is not particularly onerous and we urge members in house groups without contact people to volunteer. Please email Andy Wilson at grnw99@gmail.com if you can spare just a small amount of your time.
